I am extremely grateful to be one of Ally’s Allies and for the opportunity it has given me to work with Amigos de las Americas for a semester of their Gap Program in Nicaragua. The Live Like Ally Foundation has opened up a whole community of caring people who all want to leave a positive mark across the globe. Ally’s message to see the beauty of the world while challenging oneself to learn from it has inspired me to push myself out of my comfort zone.
Traveling has always been a large part of my life, as traveling reveals similarities, as well as differences between cultures while teaching a lot about oneself. I grew up in Nairobi, Kenya before moving to the U.S. when I was 10. Living in the U.S. made me appreciate aspects of my life in Kenya and vice versa. I decided that after High School I should take a year to travel, at first back to Kenya as well as Tanzania and Zambia, where I have family. Then I decided to travel to somewhere new and out of my comfort zone, Nicaragua. With the Amigos de las Americas program I hope to work on community based environmental projects, while advancing my Spanish and learning about Nicaraguan culture.
I hope to make a difference by bringing what I can to these projects, and then go to university after this experience with a better understanding of who I am and who I want to be. Live Like Ally is greatly helping me take on this experience to add another layer to my view of the world.
