Hi! My name is Calvin and I am from Aurora, Ohio. If there is one thing to know about me, it’s that I have an intense passion for soccer. It is a big part of my life and an even bigger part of my upcoming trip. This Christmas, I am traveling with my church to go to Kenya, Africa to lead a Bible camp for children that have been rescued from the sex trade. We will teach Bible lessons in the morning and play games with the children (especially soccer) in the afternoon.
The camp is a yearly tradition for the kids, and they have been through a lot in their lives, so they really look forward to it. Our church went last year, and it was a great experience for me. The kids have so few material possessions yet they have so much joy, and when I returned home, I almost felt guilty for how fortunate I am to be living in America, which was luxury compared to where we stayed in Kenya.
Going on the trip and experiencing all that I did made me want to go back again. I love kids, and these kids in particular were really special to me. I bonded with them through soccer, and even though we all couldn’t speak the same language, we knew we had a connection. Although we will be going to a different city in Kenya and not meeting with the same group of children from last year, I am looking forward to making new bonds and interacting with the kids, hopefully having a significant impact on both their lives and mine.
I am very grateful to the Live Like Ally Foundation. I would not be able to go on the trip without their generosity, and I am glad to be a part of the LLAF family. I am blessed to be doing my part in carrying on the legacy of Ally, and I know that because of LLAF, lives will be changed this Christmas.
